Role overview

About this role

Are you searching for a temporary legal role that offers true flexibility, the chance to tackle fascinating legal questions, and the opportunity to make a real impact through complex litigation? Do you want the freedom to work remotely and/or for a shorter term while supporting high-profile legal matters? Join a collaborative legal team as a Temporary Staff Attorney, where your legal expertise and need for flexibility can thrive together.

We are seeking a Temporary Staff Attorney who is admitted to practice in the State of California. This is a fully remote role, but successful candidates must be based in and work from one of the following states: California, New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, the District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia.

The successful candidate will report to the Director of Litigation Operations and work alongside a team of temporary staff attorneys. This position is tied to a specific group of matters and will conclude upon completion of the primary assignment, which may be as short as two to three months.

Responsibilities

Temporary Staff Attorneys support a nationwide plaintiff-side class action and complex litigation practice by handling matter-specific projects, including:

  • Conducting targeted case law research on class certification, remedies, expert admissibility, notice, and defenses.
  • Preparing expert background summaries, including credentials, testimony history, publications, and known defense challenges.
  • Preparing research memoranda, case charts, and string citations for review by senior attorneys.
  • Collecting and analyzing pleadings, discovery materials, deposition excerpts, and technical documents.
  • Tracking new decisions, rule changes, and briefing deadlines relevant to claims and defenses.
  • Summarizing key authorities from California, the Ninth Circuit, and other jurisdictions on a range of issues, including settlement approval requirements and recent court concerns affecting class settlements.
  • Tracking developments in cases involving valuation, restitution, and class-wide proof of harm.
  • Monitoring public statements, policy updates, investor disclosures, and litigation filings.
  • Undertaking other legal work as directed.

Qualifications

Successful candidates will have a combination of employment, educational, and life experience demonstrating the following qualities and skills:

Experience and Education

  • Minimum of 1 year of legal experience, ideally within a law firm supporting a litigation practice.
  • Strong analytical, legal writing, research, and organizational skills.
  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • Active membership in the California Bar in good standing and admission in the state where remote work will be performed (if different).

Ownership, Initiative, and Teamwork

  • Takes ownership of projects and follows through to completion.
  • Proactively seeks additional work when capacity permits.
  • Able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Confidentiality

  • Demonstrates sound judgment in handling confidential information.
  • Adheres to all policies and procedures regarding the protection of sensitive client, personnel, and organizational data.

Mission Orientation

  • Passionate about using legal skills to support meaningful advocacy and complex litigation.
  • Motivated by work that has a clear purpose and impact.
